Nutrition In Plants For Class 7 Worksheets With Answers

What is Nutrition in Plants?

Plants, just like humans and animals, need nutrition to survive and grow. Nutrition in plants refers to the process through which plants obtain and utilize essential substances, such as minerals and nutrients, needed for their growth and development.

Types of Nutrition in Plants

Plants can obtain nutrition through two main processes: autotrophic nutrition and heterotrophic nutrition.

Autotrophic Nutrition

Plants that can prepare their food using simple substances like water, carbon dioxide, and sunlight are said to have autotrophic nutrition. They use a process called photosynthesis to convert light energy into chemical energy. This energy is then used to combine water and carbon dioxide to make glucose, a type of sugar that serves as their food.

Heterotrophic Nutrition

Some plants, however, are unable to prepare their own food. They rely on external sources for nutrition. These plants are said to have heterotrophic nutrition. They obtain their nutrition by consuming other organisms or decaying organic matter.

How Do Plants Obtain Nutrients?

Plants absorb nutrients from their surroundings through their roots. The roots have tiny hair-like structures called root hairs that increase the surface area for absorption. Nutrients are present in the soil and are taken up by the roots through osmosis and active transport.
